It seems that whenever a mansion is snapped up by London’s mega-rich their first thought is to expand – upwards, outwards or downwards – makes no difference. At London’s most chic addresses, the sheikhs, tycoons and various multimillionaires who own such properties are spreading them in every direction, something which has caused, er, a little controversy with their neighbours to say the least.

For example, a couple of weeks ago, mobile phone billionaire John Caudwell said he plans to link two massive Mayfair pads by digging a 14,000 square foot space between them – a spectacular attempt to build a mega mansion in the capital.
