The Mayor of London’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) will include Wimbledon by the end of 2023, it has been announced. The zone, which currently occupies the area inside the North and South Circular roads, will be extended to all 33 Greater London boroughs, including Merton, according to the Mayor, Sadiq Khan.
The expansion means that drivers of the most polluting vehicles will need to pay £12.50 a day to drive anywhere within the capital.
According to the mayor’s office, the move will take up to 40,000 polluting vehicles off the road and cut dangerous nitrogen oxide gases by 10 per cent.
However, the Mayor has said that “further bold measures” will also be required to improve air quality, tackle the climate emergency and reduce congestion.
Mr Khan said: “The triple challenges of tackling toxic air pollution, the climate emergency and congestion mean we need to further reduce emissions from vehicles in London. We simply don’t have time to waste.”
“I believe the proposal to extend the Ulez London-wide will have the biggest effect on emissions and congestion relative to the potential financial impact on Londoners as a whole,” he added.
Currently, drivers of most diesel vehicles, older than seven years – or 16 years old in the case of petrol – must pay the Ulez charge if they enter or move around the zone. Fines of £160 are issued for failure to pay. People driving into central London must pay the £15 congestion charge, on top.
In October the Ulez was extended from an area of central London to its current boundary, taking 47,000 of the most polluting vehicles a day off the roads and leading to an estimated 30 per cent cut in nitrogen oxide.
